In addition, in my continuing commitment to be visible and accessible
to the members, my goal is to visit as many local sections as
possible, and meet with lay audiences—high school classes,
civic clubs and the like—when I do. By the end of 2005,
I have visited nearly seventy unique local sections, with more
scheduled this year. In addition, I have met with a similar number
of Student Affiliates and High School classes, and talked to
thousands of students, members and citizens, mostly in small
groups. This is the best part of the job, and I am always willing
to visit a local section if the schedule permits. Just ask.
Recently, the National Academy of Sciences published a report
on innovation and the future called “Rising Above the Gathering
Storm.” This report contains important news for chemists
and a validation of our conclusions that innovation is the economic
engine of our nation’s future and that there is certainly
opportunity in the sciences. You can review the executive summary
at http://darwin.nap.edu/execsumm_pdf/11463 and the full report
at http://www.nap.edu/books/0309100399/html/1.html. The president
reinforced its conclusions in his 2006 State of the Union address
http://www.whitehouse.gov/stateoftheunion/2006/index.html and
legislation is on its way.
President Ann Nalley has adopted a complementary theme: “Ensuring
the Future.” I look forward to working with her on ways
of making the next ten years the best they can be.
